On the city’s main street, this building, which houses the University of the Republic, the Rectorate and the Law School, is one of Montevideo’s landmarks. It consists of a courtyard-style construction with a broad and unbroken interior gallery and two spacious rectangular quadrangles surrounded by cloisters. Special features are the large assembly hall, known as the University Auditorium, and the library.

Built in classic Renaissance style, it was designed by architects Juan María Aubriot and Silvio Geranio and opened in 1911.
