It is the most important theater in Montevideo and a city landmark. Some remarkable features are its large plaza, its open galleries with checkered floors and the ornamentation of its house which resembles the Scala di Milano.

Given its formal characteristics, the architectural style is Neoclassical. The original project was developed by architect C. Zucchi in 1837.
