A major avenue designed in the second half of the 19th century as a thoroughfare to border what was then the newest part of the city, with the purpose of fixing its boundaries. It starts out at the rambla in Punta Carretas and after a 90º curve, ends in Capurro. It serves as a means of connection with a number of national highways.

Buildings in very diverse architectural styles are to be found along the length of this street, as well as several of the city’s major monuments.
