A public square located on the boundary between the neighborhoods of Ciudad Vieja and Centro. This iconic square-–with the statue of Artigas at the center—is a venue for official public ceremonies.

CENTRO, CIUDAD VIEJA. Juncal, plaza Independencia
It was created as a public space in 1836 and is the work of a military engineer, José M. Reyes. Its present shape and dimensions were established in 1837. The features introduced by architect Carlos Zucchi, who designed the square’s current concept of space, are in the manner of laudatory squares in the classic French style.
